Photo: Kat Murphy The Leland girls cross country program had never taken an award home from a major invitational prior to the 2017 campaign, but five freshmen — call them the Fab Five — changed that at the Ellsworth House on the Hill Invite on Saturday.

The fivesome of Twyla Walters, Emma Waskiewicz, Madelyn Weist, Melia Couturier and Sydney Richardson finished fourth, fifth, seventh, 11th, and 16th as the Lady Comets walked away with a second-place finish — and a plaque.

“The kids came off the first Northwest Conference jam on Tuesday at Glen Lake feeling a little discouraged, after fighting a really hard course there, so they were ready to prove themselves on Saturday,” Leland coach Kat Murphy said. “It was quite hot, but all the kids were really focused and did not let the conditions de-rail them. Most dropped their times a considerable amount. They all ran really strong and supported each other.

“It was a great confidence booster for these young girls as they race older girls with more experience.”

On the boys side, the Zach Fortunaled Comets finished third as a team after crossing in 10th, 27th, 31st, 36th and 38th place. Team members are Fortuna, Jackson Arens, Julian Arens, Max Jordan and Cormac Rasey.

Times from the Ellsworth House on the Hill Invite were not posted to Athletic.net at press time.
