Brethren woman charged with causing accident


SMITH SMITH A 42-year-old Brethren woman was arraigned on a charge of felony drunken driving that stemmed from a Sept. 19 motor vehicle crash at South Manitou Trail and East Traverse Lake Road in Cleveland Township.

Carissa L. Smith, 42, is currently free on a $10,000 personal recognizance bond.

At the time of the accident a Breathalyzer test showed Smith had a blood alcohol level of .115 percent, according to court records. After being transported to Munson for treatment of injuries sustained in the accident, Smith consented to a blood draw that showed an alcohol level of .119 percent, court records show.

The legal limit in Michigan is .08 percent.

Smith has been ordered to provide twice-daily PBTs and discretionary urine screens.

She was convicted of impaired driving in 2007 and in 2015 in 85th District Court in Manistee, records show.

She will be represented by a court-appointed attorney. Her probable cause conference has been set for Oct. 31; a preliminary examination on the charges has been set for Nov. 7.
