The effort brought in more than $8,500 for an effort to support the Putting Down Roots capital campaign to purchase the Connie Binsfield building in Lake Leelanau.

“It was fantastic,” organizer Kallie Craker said of the event. “It was wet and chilly but well attended.”

Craker said Suttons Bay graduate and University of Michigan student Nick Amato defended his 2016 title in the 5K, outpacing Montessori alumnus Levi Deters and third-place finisher Troy Craig. Abby Strietmann, a former Montessori staff member, defended her women’s title for the third straight year. Lexi Gregory and Susan Townsend finished second and third, respectively.

The Montessori asks for continued community support as it works to raise $250,000 for the down payment of the Binsfield building by Nov. 27. Fundraising efforts will continue from there until the school meets its goal of $1.1 million for the complete purchase and renovation of the building.
