Service helps expunge criminal record

Legal Services of Northern Michigan (LCNM) will hold its biannual “Clean Record Clinic,” a free expungement program to clear old criminal convictions.

The program results from partnership between LCNM and volunteer attorneys in the Grand Traverse- Leelanau-Antrim Bar Association and Women Lawyers Association.

Michigan law allows individuals to set aside certain convictions years after a sentence has been served and probation completed. Small fees are required to complete the process, but legal assistance at the clinic is free.

Clients must call in advance to register and complete a screening process. Screening is already underway, and more clients and volunteer attorneys are welcome.

The clinic is supported by Equal Justice Works, Rotary Charities of Traverse City and the Michigan State Bar Foundation.

Further information is available by calling 941-0771, extension 205 or via email at HAbraham@lsnm.org.
