Leelanau cares for its people

Seven hundred people.

That’s the estimate for the turnout to a fund raiser to help the Weber family meet expenses while Randy, the highly successful Glen Lake baseball coach, recovers from very serious injuries incurred when a tree he was cutting fell awkwardly on him.

While a final tally isn’t available of the amount of money raised, it should be enough to make a dent in the uphill struggle faced by the Webers. All 160-plus donated auction items were sold.

We smiled at learning that the “luncheon ladies” at Holy Rosary Catholic Church — the people who make a habit of serving others in their time of need — offered the high bid for dinner for six with Rev. Donald Libby on the deck at the rectory. No group is more deserving of being waited on.

The event’s success says much about Leelanau County, and the impact made by Coach Weber.
