Part of Greilickville votes in city election

A small group of Leelanau County residents have an opportunity to help elect a mayor and commissioners for the City of Traverse City next week.

Some 262 persons living in an area annexed by the City of Traverse City in the 1970s are eligible to vote in Tuesday’s election.

Jim Carruthers is the only candidate for mayor.

Five candidates are seeking three city commissioner seats. They are Michele P. Howard, Gary Howe, Jeff Leonhardt, Brian Patrick McGillivary and Timothy Werner.

The polling place is the Traverse City Housing Commission, 10200 E. Carter Centre.

During a general election, votes cast in the annexed are go to the Leelanau County Clerk’s office.

However, because there no ballot issues countywide or in local townships, the ballots will go to the Grand Traverse County Clerk’s office and will be canvassed there, Leelanau Clerk Michelle Crocker said.

Results from the remainder of the city vote will combine with the Leelanau votes to determine the winners.

The southeast corner of the county including the Tom’s West Bay retail center was annexed into Traverse City. While the property remains a part of Leelanau County, it is not a part of Elmwood Township.
