Busy holidays planned in Omena, Northport

Landon Browning, son of Omena residents Jim and Kathryn Browning, is now in the co-pilot seat for Envoy Air, an American Airlines group company. Landon is based in New York City where he flies out of both LaGuardia and JFK airports. He and his wife, the former Amanda Barnes of Traverse City, are living in Bushwick in Brooklyn and enjoying getting to know New York City.

Landon’s sister Lauren just returned from a business trip to NYC where she also got to spend lots time with Landon and Amanda. Lauren’s business partner, Liz Lane, flew in from Denver and they all enjoyed the City, as well as getting a little business done.

Landon is a graduate of Northport Public School, NMC, and Michigan State. After graduating from MSU, he returned to NMC’s Aviation program. Landon had wanted to be pilot since he was young. There was a brief time, after Cammie Buehler became a professional snowboarder, that he aspired to that, but never seriously pursued that path.

NMC’s Aviation program is an almost hidden jewel in the area, recognized nationally but often not as well appreciated by those of us living here. NMC’s cadre of flight instructors range tremendously in age and experience, in part the result of an instructional approach that puts students in the air right at the beginning of their freshman year and then elevates them to flight instructors by junior year. Balancing out the fresh faces coming out of the two-year flight program are the semiretired professionals who bring exceptional experience and expertise. Some instructors are former U.S. military “Top Guns”; others are businessmen with decades of experience in the air. The talent base attracts more talent, and NMC has become one of a few schools in the country that doesn’t have a problem hiring instructors.

Coming back down to earth, the holidays are upon us. I don’t know how that happened so fast. The weekend after Thanksgiving is a busy one in Leelanau Township. That Saturday, Nov. 25, is the Merchants’ Open Houses in downtown Northport all day. Also going on that day is the Christmas in the Village Arts Fair at the Village Arts Building. That evening at 6 pm is the annual Northport Tree Lighting.

On Sunday afternoon, Nov. 26, it’s time to Deck the Village of Omena. Everyone is welcome to help decorate the post office, the Omena Historical Society’s Putnam-Cloud Tower House, and the Firehall and Community Room.
