Draft Board once did dark work of war

At one time in Leelanau County the local draft board was tasked with the difficult decisions or ordering young men to report for active military service. The following story ran on the front page of the Jan. 31, 1952, Leelanau Enterprise, with the Korean War in full swing.

Twelve more men have been ordered February 13 for induction into the armed forces from this county.

They are Anthony Bodus, Robert L. Haywood, and Keith E. Parker of Cedar; Duane Newman, Leonard S. Rowe, and Reginald W. Draper of Maple City; Robert J. Stewart of Glen Arbor; Ray J. Norris of Traverse City route 3; Willard J. King of Omena; Emil T. Walters of Suttons Bay; Walter A. Boutain of Lake Leelanau; and James W. Humphries of South Manitou Island.

Twenty-five men, also on February 13, are scheduled to report for physical examination.
