Four county players land all-state laurels

Cobe Lund and four other county standouts secured spots on Michigan High School Soccer Coaches Association Division 4 all-state teams.

Lund, a striker, picked up first-team plaudits after registering 42 goals and 20 assists as a junior. He found the scoresheet in all but two games for the Comets, who finished 23-2.

Two seniors, Leland midfielder Chris Ursu and North Bay striker Brett Dyer, also secured all-state distinction, landing spots on the third team. Ursu tallied 17 goals and 12 assists; Dyer had 35 goals and 11 assists.

Two Comets, junior midfielder Nick Saffell and sophomore centre-back Owen Kareck, were named honorable mention. Saffell supplied 17 goals and 17 assists to the Leland attack this year while Kareck anchored a back line that allowed just 13 goals in 25 games.

Buckley, the team sandwiched between Leland and North Bay in the conference standings, contributed three players to all-state teams: senior keeper Joey Weber (first team), junior forward Ridge Beeman (second) and senior defender Denver Cade (third). The Bears shut out Leland in the regional final before falling to Kalamazoo Hackett 3-1 in the state semifinals.
