Hunters shoot pair of 4-points; ticketed

Conservation Officer Colton Gelinas issued a pair of antler point restriction (APR) violations last week to hunters on Leelanau County land.

Both individuals killed 4-points.

“If you’re not sure, don’t shoot it,” Gelinas said.

The Leelanau County Sheriff’s Department received two illegal hunting complaints last week, one on opening day in Glen Arbor Township and one last Thursday in Leelanau Township, but Gelinas had no other violations or accidents to report.

Gelinas said he saw about 35 to 40 trucks parked in and around Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore opening day. The top trophy he had seen as of Friday afternoon was an 8-point with an inside spread of 16 inches.

“It was slower,” Gelinas said of the opener. “That rain didn’t help.”
