Still time to donate toys

Toys for Tots had collected about 600 toys and other items for needy children as of early this week at 31 locations around Leelanau County.

The county coordinator of the regional drive, Pat Myers of Cedar, said she’s hopeful that Toys for Tots will achieve its target of 1,000 toys collected in Leelanau County before a Dec. 18 deadline.

New, unwrapped toys, books and other items are being collected in a five-county region. Regional organizers said their overall target is 23,000 toys – the same target as last year.

The toys will be distributed to needy children through 14 human services agencies operating in the region. Collections were down two years ago, but rebounded last year. Organizers have extended the deadline this year in hopes of achieving or exceeding last year’s level.

“I’m optimistic that we’ll reach our goal,” Myers said. “There’s no telling how the weather will affect us. A little snow puts people in the Christmas spirit; but too much snow can keep them away.”

The Toys for Tots campaign accepts monetary contributions in addition to donations of toys and other items. Further information is available by visiting website at toysfortots.org online or by calling 933-0344.
