Bear Lake spoils opener

Joan Ogemaw scored 15 points in the North Bay season opener against Bear Lake in Northport last Wednesday.

Other than that, coach Jim Champion didn’t have too many positive takeaways from the 35-30 loss.

“We struggled offensively,” Champion said, “but I’ve got to give Bear Lake some credit. They did a very good job of denying Joan the ball in the post. She worked incredibly hard for her points. She didn’t get frustrated and just kept working. She had to scratch and claw for everything she got.”

North Bay led by two at halftime but struggled to corral rebounds in the third quarter after switching to a zone.

In the fourth quarter, Champion said, Bear Lake simply hit more shots.

“We played pretty good defense for spurts; then we’d have a little letdown,” Champion said. “I’m not totally dissatisfied with the defensive effort, but we have things to work on.”
