GLEN LAKE guard Savannah Peplinski, pictured in a Class C semifinal win over St. Ignace last season, began her senior season by scoring 17 points in a big win at Elk Rapids on Friday. Glen Lake teammate Kaitlyn Schaub also poured in 17. Fresh off an appearance in the Class C semifinals in March, the Glen Lake girls have started their season strong.

Real strong.

Savannah Peplinski and Kaitlyn Schaub each put up 17 points on Friday as the Lady Lakers returned from Elk Rapids with a 67-27 victory.

Glen Lake coach Jason Bradford said his team took control of the game in the first half by scoring 26 unanswered points.

“We didn’t miss a beat subbing in,” Bradford said. “Girls coming in off the bench moved the ball and were really, really good. Many of our highlights were from girls off the bench.”

Schaub delivered a double-double in her 2017-18 debut, adding 11 rebounds in the victory. Peplinski, a senior, added five boards and four assists.

A freshman, point guard Hailey Helling, added 10 points and three steals while returning starters Allie Bonzelet and Jennifer LaCross poured in 15 points combined.

“The girls came out, were aggressive and did what we’ve been working on,” Bradford said. “You never know what you’re going to get in your first game, but it was good to see them pick up where they left off last year without Kelly (Bunek) and Sarah (Carney).”

The team was slated to host Traverse City St. Francis last night, although the status of the game was in question at press time due to a power outage in the southwest portion of the peninsula.
