Varying hours for governments

Christmas falls on a Monday this year making for a three-day weekend for many.

But for some local and state government employees, the holiday celebration will begin tomorrow.

The Leelanau County Government Center will be closed Friday, Dec. 22 and Monday, Dec. 25.

Likewise, Secretary of State offices throughout the state will be closed Friday and Monday.

U.S. post offices around the county will open Friday with regular business hours.

Last change for Santa visit

Santa Claus will be filling out his gift list Sunday in the northern part of of the Leelanau Peninsula.

Under the request of Omena Club 21, Omena will be visiting kids at 3 p.m. in the Omena fire hall. Doors open at 2 p.m. with cookie treats, and caroling will start a half-hour later.

He’ll then head to Northport to visit at the outdoor fireplace place area next to Northport Building Supply and Ace Hardware. His arrival is expected at 6 p.m.

Meetings for a life change

The holidays are especially difficult for residents battling substance abuse. Our full Leelanau calendar, which starts on this page, lists regular Alcoholics Anonymous meetings at St. Michael’s Church in Suttons Bay, the Leelanau Township Fire Hall, St. Rita’s Rectory in Maple City, Leelanau Community Church in Lake Leelanau, Lions Club Community Center in Maple City, Immanuel Lutheran Church in Leland, United Methodist churches in Leland and Empire, Suttons Bay-Bingham District Library in Suttons Bay and Kateri Tekakwitha Church in Peshawbestown.
