Filling out that Christmas wish list

Time to fill those Christmas stockings!

With full expectations that we’re not alone in waiting until the final days before Santa flies into Leelanau, it’s just about time to go shopping.

No hurry, though. It’s only Thursday.

Ah, if we only had some of that magic dust Santa uses to fit in those tiny chimneys, we’d use a bit to fill out our Christmas list for others:

• For cherry farmers, a tariff on tart cherry imports whose income could be diverted to the Cherry Marketing Institute to promote cherry consumption. We no longer wish for a perfect season for growing cherries, which results in a bumper crop and basement commodity prices. How about an open-ended perfect season for cherry farmers? Let them fill in the blanks.

• For short-term rental landlords, neighbors of renters and the many thousands of summertime visitors to the Leelanau Peninsula, peace. Conflicts among these groups are about to boil over. Is there a happy place for regulation?

• For Suttons Bay Public School, a new superintendent just like the temporary one. Kudos to head-of-district Mike Carmean. He’s direct, addresses issues and we trust what he says. If he’s wrong, he admits it. We appreciate that.

• To downhill ski lovers, patience. Perhaps it’s the season of hope, but we still believe skiing will become part of SugarLoaf’s comeback. Your perfect Christmas gift would be a frantic glide down Awful-Awful.

• To Mr. and Mrs. Claus, who were feted Saturday at the Empire Christmas Potluck on their 50th anniversary, a restful off season.

• And in the big guy’s own words, “Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night.”
