Money in elections subject of forum

A county organization that opposes money’s influence on elections is bringing in a speaker from a statewide advocacy group with the same mission.

Craig Mauger, executive director of the nonprofit Michigan Campaign Finance Network (MCFN), will speak at a meeting that begins at noon next Wednesday, Jan. 3, in the community room of the Leelanau County Government Center.

County meets to organize

The Leelanau County Board of Commissioners will meet at 10 a.m. Tuesday to choose committee members. Will Bunek was voted in as County Board Chair a year ago, and holds the position for two years.

It will be the second meeting in a week for commissioners, who will take care of end-of-year budget matters at a special meeting set for 1 p.m. Friday.

Shake off cold for 6th ball drop

Don’t let a little cold and snow stop you from celebrating New Year’s Eve at the Northport Ball Drop, which always attracts a good-sized crowd.

Attendees usually visit local establishments prior to the event, which is thankfully short-lived lest attendees miss some of the live music at Tuckers and Mitton Brewing.

The fun may last all evening, but the ball drops at midnight.
