Injuries, inexperience challenge Comets

It’s been trial by fire for the Leland girls through four games — and the Lady Comets have felt the burn.

Leland (2-2, 1-2 Northwest) began its season on a high note with double-digit wins over the Traverse City Bulldog Athletic Association and Buckley but — after injuries to leading scorers Mollie Grishaw and Grace Noorman — lost to Kingsley and Glen Lake by 71 and 56 points, respectively.

Last week Comets coach Ryan Knudsen referred to the lopsided losses as “learning experiences.”

Among the bright spots early this season has been the emergence of freshman Olivia Lowe, who is averaging

9.8 points per game. Lowe scored 22 in the 56-48 win over Mesick.

Certainly the Comets still have much to prove this season, but they’ll have a prime opportunity at Lake Leelanau St. Mary (5-1) tomorrow night.

Editor’s note: Attempts to reach Leland coach Ryan Knudsen were unsuccessful at press time.
