Cedar Hilltoppers to honor former Snowmobile ‘Trail Boss’

FLEIS FLEIS A memorial ride is slated Saturday for a fallen member of the Cedar Hilltoppers Club, Steve Fleis.

Fleis, who grew up in Cedar, was known as the “Trail Boss” by fellow members of the Hilltoppers Club prior to his passing on Jan. 30, 2017.

He was 65.

“He was a guy that just loved to ride,” said fellow member Fred Peplinski. He knew all the trails.

“He was our leader.”

Peplinski said the ride is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. The crew will still get together at the clubhouse if Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate, he said.

“It hasn’t been real good,” Peplinski said on Monday when asked about local snowmobiling conditions. “We got all that snow, then there wasn’t real good riding because it was too fluffy, and we lost a lot when we had those two days of warm weather. This past weekend it didn’t get much better.”

As of Tuesday, the Saturday forecast called for partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the high 30s.
