What a great month February is! We get to experience snow, ice, cold weather, not so cold weather, a little sunshine, a little more snow. What fun!

The best thing about this February is the Winter Olympics. If you have to be housebound at least you can enjoy the competition.

This is the last reminder for the Glen Lake Winterfest with the Perch Fishing Contest and Chili Cookoff. Fishing starts at 7 a.m. with prizes for first through the fourth place catches. Participants bring their biggest catches from big and Little Glen Lake to the Sportsman Shop by 1 p.m. Winners will be announced on the deck at Boondocks during the Chili Cookoff.

The Cookoff starts at noon on the deck. I understand there are over 20 entrants this year. Dress warm, taste chili, listen to music, have a drink and have some fun. Admission is $10 per person, which includes unlimited chili samples. The cost is $5 for seniors over 70 and kids under 12. Proceeds go directly to the Glen Lake School’s Scholarship Fund.

I’m certain everyone had a very nice Valentine’s Day and did the right thing. If not, it could be a long year.

It was good to see Mike and Diana Sheridan out the other night. Mike has recuperated and doing well after a surgery.

Brush up on your Sam Spade. The Glen Lake Players — formerly Readers’ Theater — kicks off its 2018 season with a couple of Spades. Auditions are set for two Sam Spade plays next Wednesday, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. at the Glen Lake Community Reformed Church, 4902 W. MacFarlane Road, in Burdickville.

It’s the last three day weekend before Memorial Day. The next big day to look forward to, for some, is St. Patty’s day.

Happy birthday wishes to Andy Soderholm, Dan Oberschulte, Kathy Fordyce, Tom Rademacher, Karen Van Nort, Sue Miller and Frank Thomas Siepker. And a special Happy Birthday to George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and all the other presidents that have made our country what it is today. Unfortunately, not enough emphasis is put on these and other great presidents and framers. They are the people who shaped our country; they should be honored on Presidents’ Day and many others.

Happy anniversary wishes to Paul and Marcia Walters on a milestone anniversary. 50 years of wedded bliss.
