New S-B hire cross training

The hiring of a new employee for a “hybrid” position in transportation and maintenance was approved this week by the Suttons Bay Board of Education.

Board members voted 6-0 Monday with trustee Kim Eike excused to hire Shawn Bradford as a bus driver and maintenance employee.

Tim Smith, chief operations officer, explained the move to the School Board.

“We’ve struggled other districts finding bus drivers,” he said. “(Bradford) will also be available to help Mike Rothgarber out with grounds maintenance.”

Cross-training staff has been a priority for interim superintendent Mike Carmean.

“We have people who have earned time off and have a hard time taking it because there’s no who knows what (they) do,” he said.

Bradford has four children attending Suttons Bay Public Schools.

In other business during the monthly meeting, the School Board:

Recognized students of the month at their grade levels — Xavier Tarlton, early childhood; Max Schocko, elementary school; Tyler Porter, middle school; Wambli Roan Eagle, high school and Alyxandra Shanek, virtual school.

Approved diplomas for Suttons Bay Virtual School students Jacob Kurowski and Chino Alaniz.

Approved an overnight trip for Business Professionals of America students participating in state competition next month in Grand Rapids.

Approved a contract with Leelanau Township to collect taxes at a rate of $2.50 per parcel.
