Quick take on Leelanau Co. Spelling Bee

Contributor: The Bay Theater, Bahles of Suttons Bay and the Leelanau Club at Bahle Farms donated movie tickets and popcorn to the winners.

Who’s eligible: Students who have not advanced beyond eighth grade. In Leelanau County, Glen Lake, Leland, Pathfinder, St. Mary and Suttons Bay schools held spelling bees to determine their representatives in the county bee. Northport and the Leelanau County Montessori Academy chose not to participate.

Who made the team: The spelling bee champion was Maia Cooper of Glen Lake, with Alydia Floyd of Suttons Bay the runner up. Others among the top six spellers were Jenaya Thoreson of St. Mary, Olivia Cooper of Glen Lake, Malia Dickinson of Pathfinder School, and Sutton Leiter of Leland. The alternate speller is Faith Fowler of Leland.

Important dates:

 Wednesday, Feb. 21 — Leelanau County Spelling Bee.

 Sunday, March 18, 11 a.m. — Regional Spelling Bee sponsored by the Traverse City Record-Eagle at the State Theatre in Traverse City.

 Tuesday through Thursday, May 29-31 — Scripps National Spelling Bee at National Harbor, Md.
