Eagles cap regular season with convincing road win

Breanna Weber and the Lake Leelanau St. Mary girls tuned up for the district tournament and put the finishing touches on a 14-2 season last Thursday in a 48-17 win at Ellsworth.

Eleven different St. Mary players found the scoresheet.

“We took care of business,” said coach Pete Finch, whose team led 20-4 at halftime. “A little bit of a slow start, but in the second half we got our rhythm going. It turned into a freethrow shooting contest, but we shot 9-of-14 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter, which is good for us.”

Finch lauded the play of Weber, who matched Hanna Grant with a team-high eight points and “set the tone” defensively. Alyssa Davis added seven points and four players — Lindsey Fleis, Alexandra Kirt, Lexi Schaub and Nicole Wittman — pulled down five rebounds apiece.

St. Mary scored 21 points off 36 turnovers and assisted on 12 of 17 made baskets.

The Eagles were slated to take on North Bay in the district semifinals after press time last night.

“We’re ready,” Finch said on Tuesday. “You dance with who brung ya’ — it’s the confidence to know we got here by being who we are, and that’s who we’re going to be. We’ll see how far it takes us. The girls have earned the right to play that way. They’ve worked very hard and developed that identity.”

The winner of last night’s matchup will play Leland or district host Frankfort in the title game tomorrow.
