Northport senior Joan Ogemaw signed her national letter of intent with Lake Superior State University on Monday. Ogemaw will join Suttons Bay alumna and Northport native Kyra Vezina as a preferred walk-on with the Lakers this fall.

“Joan has achieved an outstanding athletic career at Northport Public School,” Northport Athletic Director Josh Vander Meulen said. “She is a three-sport athlete that has played 10, soon to be 11, varsity seasons. Her athletic ability was always present, but every year she was able to polish her skills and become more dominant.”

Ogemaw racked up 252 kills, 172 digs, 38 aces and 28 blocks as an outside hitter for the Wildcats last season. She is a two-time all-county selection in volleyball.

She also excels on the basketball court, capturing Leelanau County’s scoring title on the girls side in 2017.

“Joan has really grown as an athlete and individual since I first met her three years ago,” said Northport volleyball coach Teresa Szur, the athletic director at Lake Leelanau St. Mary. “Each year she not only gained more understanding about the game but also what it takes to be a competitive athlete. No doubt she is very athletic and this year learned to dominate at the net both as an attacker as well as a blocker. I’m looking forward to seeing her play in a college uniform and am proud of her for pursuing her dream to play college volleyball.”
