Haugen still on unpaid leave

Accused of domestic violence and criminal sexual conduct in Benzie County where he resides, the head of the Leelanau County Construction Code Authority, Steven Haugen, this week remained on unpaid leave and free on bail.

According to Benzie County Prosecuting Attorney Sara M. Swanson, she and Haugen’s defense attorney, Jesse Williams, had been slated to conduct a closed-door “probable cause conference” on Monday.

However, both attorneys agreed to cancel the conference, Swanson said.

A preliminary hearing is still scheduled for Monday in a Benzie County courtroom at which time a schedule will be set for further hearings, according to Swanson.

Haugen’s attorney, Williams, did not respond to a phone call or an email message from an Enterprise reporter and no further information was available this week.

Meanwhile, Paul Hunter, a fulltime employee of the Construction Code Authority, has been appointed interim building official for the county.
