Nicole Cox, who celebrated three consecutive state golf championships at Glen Lake before taking her talents to Bowling Green, finished in a first-place tie on Friday in the Sand Ridge Shootout, an 18-hole event hosted by Cleveland State at the Sand Ridge Golf Club in Chardon, Ohio.

“I had no idea,” said Cox, who tied Megan Creager and Katlyn Shutt of Youngstown State atop the 26-player field with a 74. “I didn’t find out until we got back to Bowling Green. I didn’t have WiFi. My parents told me. I was like whoa — that’s pretty cool.”

Not bad for a freshman.

Cox has fit right in with the Lady Falcons under coach Stephanie Young, recording five top-seven finishes in just 11 appearances thus far in 2017-18.

She fired a 9-over 225 and finished tied for sixth in her debut at the Illinois State Redbird Invitational on Sept. 11, carded another 9-over 225 and finished tied for third in Western Michigan’s KZoo Classic on Oct. 3, tallied a 10-over 226 in Eastern Michigan’s Shirley Spork Invitational on Oct. 9 and shot a 15-over 231 to finish seventh in the ORU/SFA Spring Break Shootout in Texas on March 21.

She’ll hope to stay hot today as she enters the Mid-American Conference Championship in Naperville, Ill.

“I’m pretty excited,” said Cox, who closed out her first semester on the Dean’s List and has “all As and one B” so far this semester. “My teammates are too. I think we’re going to do something really great this year.”

Results of today’s MAC Championship round were not available at press time, but scores from all three rounds will be posted on the Bowling Green Athletics website.
