Chimoski Bakery recently posted a sign explaining to customers that its landlord will be selling the space near the post office in Suttons Bay and that “we’ll have to be out by June 1.” Good news is on the horizon, however, for customers of the small-town bakery.

Co-owner Tina Baker said she met with a commercial property owner Monday and that the business will open soon in a new location in the village.

Baker said she can’t say when and where yet but plans to announce those arrangements as soon as she’s able.

“Customers are stepping up and saying ‘we’re going to help you move,’” Baker said, adding that the new location will have indoor seating. “I can’t believe the things that are happening.

Wineries win big in California

County wineries had a strong showing at the 2018 Pacific Rim Wine Competition in San Bernardino, Calif.

The two-day blind tasting is held in April with awards of bronze, silver, gold, best of class, best of show and grand champion. Judges include winemakers, educators, restaurateurs, sales professionals and journalists.

Six Leelanau Peninsula wineries captured three or more medals: 45 North, Bel Lago, Black Star Farms, Blustone, Boathouse and Verterra.

“Medals in a competition like Pacific Rim International are not easy to get,” said Charles Edson of Bel Lago Vineyards & Winery in Cedar. “So, a medal of any color in the Pacific Rim International Wine Competition is a real achievement — more confirmation that Leelanau Peninsula wineries have arrived on the international scene.”

Black Star Farms led the way with six medals, including two golds for its 2016 Arcturos Pinot Blanc and 2016 Medium Dry Riesling. The Suttons Bay winery also brought home two silver medals and two bronze medals.

Blustone won two golds, as well, for its 2017 Pinot Grigio and 2017 Pinot Blanc. Two silvers and a bronze medal also went to the Lake Leelanau winery.

Another Lake Leelanau winery, 45 North, also received two gold medals for its 2016 Marsanne and 2016 Sweet Riesling. The winery added one silver medal and a bronze medal.

Five medals went to yet another Lake Leelanau winery, Boathouse Vineyards. Its 2017 License to Chill won gold honors while two wines won silver and two others won bronze.

Bel Lago Winery of Cedar secured two silver medals and a bronze in addition to a silver medal in the label competition, which recognizes only three labels in a field of more than 1,000.

Verterra Winery of Leland rounded out the list of county winners with two silver medals and a bronze medal.

Local business a ‘5 Star Agency’
