Conservancy events: view wildflowers, plant trees

The Leelanau Conservancy has two events planned this week at separate natural areas.

A tree and shrub planting will be held from 10 a.m. to noon today at the Chippewa Natural Area near Empire.

Native trees and shrubs will be planted to help improve birding habitat and also regenerate a part of the red pine forest that was previously logged.

Participants should wear long pants and sturdy shoes and bring gloves and water.

Early spring blooms will be the focus Sunday of a 2 p.m. hike at the Clay Cliffs Natural Area with docents Ann McInnis, Jane Gale and Beth Chiles.

Hikers will spy native spring wildflowers and see how the plants are connected with animal species and fungal kingdom.

A highlight of the hike is the breathtaking view from the Lake Michigan overlook.

Further information is available at the group’s website.
