Boater Safety a top priority

The Marine Patrol of the Leelanau County Sheriff’s Office will host a boater safety class next month.

The day-long class, set from 8 a.m., will begin immediately afterward. There is no charge for the course. The only requirement is that participants come with a positive attitude and a desire to be a safe boater. Adults are also welcome.

Participants should also bring a sack lunch and a water bottle. Course materials will be provided.

Those born on or after July 1, 1996, may operate a boat legally only if they have been issued a boater safety certificate and have it on board the boat they are operating.

Only those persons born on or before Dec, 31, 1978, may operate a personal watercraft legally without restrictions. All others must obtain and carry a boater safety certificate.

For replacement boater certificates, call 517-373-1837, or go to the Michigan DNR website and follow the pull down menu for safety and education to “replace a certificate.”
