Taps rang out across Bingham Township cemetery

To the editor:

Today (Memorial Day) I was tending to my family’s gravesite at Maple Grove Cemetery when I noticed a gentleman walking towards the middle of the cemetery carrying a trumpet. I asked him if there was a service today and he replied that no, there was just something he wanted to do.

A few moments later the beautiful and haunting notes of “taps” began to roll over the nearby hill.

When the gentleman walked past me on the way back to his car I told him that my Dad thanked him for his playing. As he looked at the gravestone at my feet with the American flag flying next to it he said “Thank your Dad for his service.”

To the anonymous trumpet player, thank you for your thoughtful tribute to our veterans.
