Motorist nearly hits patrol car head-on

County deputies made two arrests over the weekend — one for drunk driving and one for domestic assault.

About 10 p.m. Sunday, Leelanau County Dispatch notified patrolling deputies of a black Subaru westbound on M-72 from Bugai Road traveling in the wrong lane.

A deputy near Tilton Road traveling eastbound saw the vehicle as it crossed over the center line coming directly into the path of the patrol vehicle.

The deputy swerved off the right side of the roadway to avoid a head- on collision. The deputy turned and stopped the black Subaru.

The driver of the Subaru was identified as a 28-year-old man from Royal Oak.

Upon speaking to the driver, the deputy detected a strong odor of intoxicants. The driver was arrested for suspicion of operating a motor vehicle intoxicated.

He was lodged in the Leelanau County Jail.

Deputies responded about 7:40 p.m. Saturday to Gabe’s Market near M-72 to meet with a victim of a domestic assault.

Once there, the deputy identified the victim as a 21-year-old woman from Maple City. The victim told the deputy that she was involved in an argument with her live-in boyfriend at their residence on South Newman Road.

The suspect became angry when he learned of the victim’s plan to move out of the residence. Then, the victim stated she was pushed down and thrown down by the suspect who then pulled a knife and threatened to do himself harm.

The victim was transported from her residence by a family member to Gabe’s Market where she called 911.

The suspect, a 23-year-old man, was located on foot close to the South Newman Road address. He was interviewed and then placed under arrest for suspicion of domestic assault.

He was lodged in the Leelanau County Jail.

The victim had minor injuries from the assault which did not require medical attention.

A female suspect was arrested after an incident on East Angus Road in Elmwood Township last week.

In the early-morning hours of May 29, a 48-year-old Interlochen woman showed up at her ex-boyfriend’s residence on East Angus Road. At the time, male in the home and a female friend at the residence and the suspect became upset, assaulting the former boyfriend by punching and scratching him. She was not located at that time.

The Interlochen woman returned at 1:44 a.m. the next day at which time 911 was contacted. Sheriff’s deputies arrived to find the suspect walking down the driveway at the residence.

An investigation determined the suspect was intoxicated and she had driven to the location. The Interlochen woman was placed under arrest for suspicion of operating a motor vehicle intoxicated.

She was lodged in the Leelanau County Jail. Additional charges for domestic assault will be requested.
