Some 70 veterans came to Fishtown Tuesday for a day of charter fishing.

“Boats volunteer their service so we can take these veterans out for some free fishing,” said Bill Wright, captain of The Cutter. “We sent out about 10 or 11 boats with veterans.”

Before the boats left, veteran John Farmer said he’d taken the fishing trip twice — and enjoyed both trips.

“It’s been an adventure going out there,” Farmer said. “I do fish on my time, and it’s very relaxing.”

After fishing, vets took part in a fish fry and chat on the docks of Fishtown before heading home.

Another veteran, Doug Jordan, said Tuesday marked his fourth free trip on a Leland charter boat.

“I really enjoy coming out fishing, especially with all the other guys,” Jordan said. “I also go fishing on my own time, and I will try to catch anything while I’m out there with these guys.”
