Talk of the County

Having a conversation with Kevin Dunklow

KEVIN DUNKLOW is happy to be raising his five children in his hometown of Suttons Bay. KEVIN DUNKLOW is happy to be raising his five children in his hometown of Suttons Bay. Name: Kevin Dunklow

Town or township of residence: Bingham Township

Resident since: I lived here all my life until I moved to Traverse City at 23, before moving back last November.

Age and birthplace: 37 years old and Munson Hospital

Occupation: Financial advisor for Edward Jones office in Suttons Bay.

Marital status: Divorced

You live in Leelanau County because: I moved back here so that I could be closer to my five kiddos.

Last good movie you saw: “The Greatest Showman.” It was just a great way to interact with my kids; they all really enjoyed the dancing and music.

Last good book you read: “Rhinoceros Success,” by Scott Alexander. It’s a self-motivation book that was recommended to me by a co-worker.

If you could trade places with one person for one day, it would be: Steve Jobs. The iPhone is such a prevalent part of today’s society and so I think it would be interesting to look back on how he started the Apple empire.

Things important to you that you’ve accomplished so far: First and foremost is being a good father to my kids, making sure that I have time for them and to put all of their activities first. Second is transitioning into a new career in finance, after 17 years in law enforcement. It’s been a big step to build a life-long career through Edward Jones and I’m looking forward to opening my own practice in Glen Arbor.

What you hope to be doing in 10 years: I hope to be running a successful business as a financial advisor, watching two of my kids work their way through college and following my three younger kids in their high school activities.

Things you lose sleep over: Nothing really, unless I have a sick kid to take care of.

If you could change one thing in Leelanau County it would be: I would make the summer season a little bit longer. I love all the seasons here but the summer always just feels too short.

Favorite dessert: Cheesecake

Are you a coffee drinker? I am. I drink at least two cups of straight black coffee every morning.

Favorite place in Leelanau County: Our family farm that belonged to my grandparents on my mother's side. They owned 160 acres across from Murray Court in Suttons Bay. I spent a lot of time growing up there and so there are a lot of good memories that I’ve held on to from there.

If you had more time you would: I would probably travel more, to anywhere that’s tropical, warm and sunny.

The words that best describe you are: Hardworking, educated, loyal, humble and personable - I really enjoy getting to know people and meeting new people.
