Ione Ruth (Reincke) Shugart

A family celebration of life will be held at a later date for Ione Ruth (Reincke) Shugart who died Friday, June 22.

She was 87.

Ione was born April 30, 1931, the fourth child born of Howard W. and Celia (Belle) Hinshaw Reincke, at the farm home in Keswick.

She began school in Keswick and graduated with honors from Suttons Bay High School, earning a scholarship to what is now Central Michigan University in 1952.

Ione graduated with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. She first taught at Traverse Heights Elementary, moving to Mount Pleasant Pullen School, following her marriage to Rex O. Shugart in 1953.

For several years, Ione supported her husband as he completed academic studies. The Shugarts then returned to Traverse City, and she taught in Suttons Bay at the “Old Stone Schoolhouse.”

She retired from teaching as she and her husband moved to Grand Rapids. For 37 years, Ione enjoyed a full life in Grand Rapids, raising a family, becoming a “professional volunteer” at Faith United Methodist Church and her childrens’ elementary school.

The Shugart spent many summers with their children at their cottage on Lake Leelanau. Upon their retirement in 1995, Ione and Rex established their home in Bingham.

Surviving Ione are her husband, Rex; their two children Steven R. (Shelly) Shugart of Traverse City and Diane L. Shugart of Chicago; three grandchildren; sisters Orpha L. Drone and Ann E. Reincke; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Ione was preceded in death by a sister, F. Lorraine (William) Weigand; brother H. Wesley (Donna) Reincke; brother-in-law Ed Drone and nephews Lynn Weigand and Victor L. Drone.
