James Charles Kalchik

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, July 2 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Lansing for Leland Township native James Charles Kalchik who died Sunday, June 24.

He was 90.

James was born on Jan. 25, 1928, the son of Roy and Celia (Houdek) Kalchik. He graduated from Northport High School and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Marquette University.

James proudly served his country as a member of the Army during the Korean War. He returned home and married his wife Virginia (Popp) Kalchik on May 22, 1954.

James worked for the State of Michigan as a highway design engineer retiring in 1991. He enjoyed bowling, golf, cards, traveling, and his family.

James is preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Kalchik; parents Roy and Celia Kalchik and sisters Gertrude and Betty.

Surviving are his daughters, Sylvia (Chuck) Efken of St. Louis, Mo.; Rita (Herb) Cradduck of Lake Leelanau; Donna (Bob) Law of Laughlin, Nev.; Synthia (Bruce) Semon of Kinglsey; sons Richard (Lynne) Kalchik of Winter Garden, Fla.; Ronald (Laura) Kalchik of Zanesville, Ohio; Daniel (Lisa) Kalchik of Lansing; Donald of North Tonawanda, N.Y.; 18 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; brothers, Elmer and Tom, sisters Bernice and Pat and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visiting will start at 10 a.m., prior to the Mass with a rosary starting at 10:45 a.m.
