Drinking leads to many problems

Five persons were arrested in the county in the past week in separate incidents involving alcohol.

Early Monday morning, a deputy patrolling M-22 near East Cherry Bend Road observed a 2003 tan BMW speeding northbound, according to a Sheriff’s Office report. The vehicle was clocked traveling 53 mph in a 40 mph zone.

A traffic stop was made and the driver was identified as a 40-year-old man from Ann Arbor. The deputy smelled intoxicants when speaking to the driver, who was arrested for suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

He was lodged in the Leelanau County jail.

Later Monday, a 32-year-old Indianapolis man was arrested for operating a motor vehicle while drunk.

About 8:45 p.m. Sunday, deputies responded to a report of a man passed out in a running vehicle on St. Joseph St. in Suttons Bay.

Upon awakening him, deputies smelled intoxicants on his breath. The man admitted to drinking prior to entering his vehicle, a report states. The 50-year-old man from East Jordan was placed under arrest for suspicion of operating a motor vehicle intoxicated. He was jailed.

Very early that day - at about 4:30 a.m. - deputies had responded to the Falling Waters Lodge in Leland on a report of a disturbance.

A 911 call came into the dispatch center where a man could be heard yelling, “I did not fight with her.”

Deputies located a 36-year-old man from Bowling Green, Ohio, sitting on the stairs with clothing and bags scattered about. They found a nearby room in disarray with items broken and smashed on the floor.

The investigation determined that the man and his 32-year-old girlfriend had been drinking alcohol the previous evening. The man’s mother was also staying at the Lodge, caring for the couple’s 3-year-old child.

Deputies learned the man returned from an evening out but the female did not. He went to sleep but awoke around 4 a.m. and became angered that the female had not returned.

The man threw things around in the room and the mother took the child out and called 911, the report stated.

Deputies located a 32-year-old female from Swanton, Ohio, in the parking lot next to the couple’s vehicle. She was suffering from multiple minor abrasions.

The victim said that she had been drinking with her boyfriend when he became angered by a conversation she was having with another woman. The victim stated the male pushed, hit and kicked her.
