Patriotism permeated the village of Northport Wednesday, as spectators for the annual fireworks show bustled from main street to the marina all day long.

Although Northport Village Administrative Coordinator Barb Von Voigtlander suspects that attendance was slightly down from last year, she was left very impressed by the live music, food, boat parade and fireworks show.

“The day went off without a hitch,” said Von Voigtlander, who estimates over 1,000 people flocked to Northport’s Lake Michigan shoreline.

She was equally pleased with the lack of debris and trash left behind by such a large crowd, perhaps due to the fact that more trash cans were available than in past years.

For spectators, the day continued a decades-long tradition of family-friendly fun.

“We’ve been coming for at least 10 years,” said Caroline Burke of Canton. “The whole day is spent with friends and family. We start with breakfast, then the dinghy poker race, and of course the boat parade before the show.”

As a Leelanau County native, Derek Piglowski feels that Northport is the perfect venue.

“It’s always a bit more quiet and has a bit of a more family-esque feel to it than in Traverse City,” Piglowski said, before the skies were lit afire by the patriotic display.
