Talk of the County

Having a conversation with Peggy Hanford

PEGGY HANFORD is the happiest she’s ever been in her life. A school administrative assistant, Hanford can be found during her free time doing a number of “odd jobs,” around her Bingham Township home. PEGGY HANFORD is the happiest she’s ever been in her life. A school administrative assistant, Hanford can be found during her free time doing a number of “odd jobs,” around her Bingham Township home. Name: Peggy Hanford

Township of residence: Bingham

Resident since: I’ve lived in Leelanau County for 14 years.

Age and Birthplace: I am 57, was born in Hastings, and grew up in Petoskey.

Occupation: Administrative Assistant in the Middle/High School at Suttons Bay Public Schools

Marital Status: I’ve been married to the love of my life and soul-mate for 34 years, Chris Hanford.

You live in Leelanau County because: I was teaching at St. Mary School and it made sense to move closer. At the time I was living on Old Mission Peninsula.

Last good movie you saw: “I Can Only Imagine.” It proved that “the cream always rises to the top” with God’s help.

Last good book you read: I am a James Patterson junkie. I’ll read anything by him. I have purchased his books from the SB Library summer sale, but usually grab them at second hand stores.

If you could trade places with one person for one day, it would be: Absolutely no one. I am the happiest I’ve ever been in my life. I am so blessed.

Things important to you that you’ve accomplished so far: Raising two amazing, society-contributing kids, Emily and Jack.

What you hope to be doing in 10 years: Camping more

Things you lose sleep over: Our pooch, Mille. She’s an Australian Shepherd who always needs a job, so her “occupation” has become getting me up nearly daily at 5:30 a.m. to chase a frisbee.

If you could change one thing in Leelanau County, it would be: Absolutely nothing. This little gem is heaven on earth!

Favorite dessert: White cake with real, very sugary, white frosting

Are you a coffee drinker: Absolutely! I love it first thing in the morning and my latest addiction is cold brew with cream.

Favorite place in Leelanau County: Our home. We have the greatest neighborhood, our house backs up to a natural bog and we are lucky enough to have a great view of West Bay.

If you had more time, you would: Continue “putzing.” My Dad was a “putzer” and I guess I inherited that from him. I love doing odd jobs — painting furniture, mowing the lawn, snowblowing, weeding my garden. My latest hobby is paintpouring. It’s an interesting technique that results in magic — you never really know how it’s going to turn out.

Three words that describe you: Friendly, I think, energetic most of the time and stubborn — when I’m right — and if you ask my husband, he’ll say that’s most of the time.
