500 bicyclists converge in G-A; recall old settlers

This is normally the busiest time of the summer tourist season. But the kids have to go back to school shortly and parents go home to get them ready. Athletes will soon start showing up for practice. But don’t fear, as summer is far from over. People will keep showing up.

On Tuesday the Shoreline West Bicycle Tour will be in our area from mid -morning to mid-afternoon. There will be 500 riders joining the tour this year, so be careful.

The Benefit Concert: “Old Friends - a Simon & Garfunkel tribute band” performed at Old Settlers Park and was almost rained out. But many, many hard-core fans hung in there and enjoyed the concert.

Speaking of Old Settlers Picnic Grounds, each Sunday morning at 8 a.m. you are invited to meet at Old Settlers for fellowship, music, meditation and discussion of one of the parables of Jesus. Coffee and treats will be provided. All are welcome.

The annual Port Oneida Heritage Run through historic farms and barns raises funds to help preserve over 200 historic buildings in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Choose your race between the farmers flat and the fast 5K, homesteaders hillier 5K and tillers 10K. Each course winds through the Port Oneida rural historic district. Packet pickup and walk-on registration is from 7-8:15 a.m. The kids schoolhouse/ quarter- mile and awards will start at 8:20 a.m. The 10K run starts at 8:40 a.m. Homesteaders 5K run/walk at 8:50 a.m. and the Farmers Flat and Fast 5K starts at 8:55 a.m.

A reminder that the Port Oneida Fair, with its hay baling and soap making, is set for Friday and Saturday, Aug. 10-11. More next week.

We enjoyed very welcome visitors from Illinois over the weekend. They had to leave for home too soon. We miss them.
