Talk of the County

Having a conversation with Leonard Marszalek

AN ACTIVE VOLUNTEER, Leonard Marszalek donates much of his time to the Leelanau County community. AN ACTIVE VOLUNTEER, Leonard Marszalek donates much of his time to the Leelanau County community. Name: Leonard Marszalek

Town or township of residence: As of this year, Suttons Bay, but before that I lived in Empire Township since 2010.

Resident since: Part-time resident since 1987 and year-round since 2010

Age and birthplace: I was born in Indiana and I’m 71 years old.

Occupation: Semi-retired. I keep busy doing a lot of volunteer work for Friends of Sleeping Bear, the Glen Arbor Arts Center, the Glen Lake Library expansion project and the State Theatre.

Marital status: Widowed

You live in Leelanau County because: When I first came in the '80s, we decided that this is the ultimate place to be, from the water and landscape to all the activities.

Last good movie you saw: “Solo.” I’ve been a Star Wars junkie since they started to come out in the '70s.

Last good book you read: “Eunice: The Kennedy Who Changed the World,” by Eileen McNamara. I was trying to understand a little more about the Kennedy family and Eunice has turned out to be kind of an unknown person that really was a very good leader and maybe even had more influence than some of the others in the family.

If you could trade places with one person for one day, it would be: The late Steve Jobs because of his vision of what the world should be like.

Things important to you that you’ve accomplished so far: The work I’ve done with art, architecture and a focus on environment. Also my family. As you get older you realize how extremely important your family is.

What you hope to be doing in 10 years: I hope I’m still alive, I’m trying to keep in good health. I’d like to still be doing what I have been, especially volunteering as part of the community.

Things you lose sleep over: I wouldn’t say that it makes me lose sleep necessarily but I am always thinking about the things I’m doing, the people I’m working with. I just want to make sure that I’m always doing the right thing.

If you could change one thing in Leelanau County it would be: Unfortunately I think what needs to be improved is discussions about politics. They should be more community focused. Everyone gets hung up on money and different things and we should all be working for a common goal here.

Favorite dessert: Chocolate chip ice cream. Chocolate is my weakness.

Are you a coffee drinker? One five-ounce cup of espresso every morning gets me going.

Favorite place in Leelanau County: The Village of Empire.

If you had more time you would: Volunteer more. I really love being out there and meeting new people.

The words that best describe you are: My girlfriend says I’m OCD and I do try to be organized. I’d also say caring, sensitive to people, and energetic.
