DARLENE GARLAND is a treasured fixture in the Suttons Bay community. Her favorite view in Leelanau County is from the bleachers at the school’s football field. Name: Darlene Garland

Town or township of residence: Bingham Township

Resident since: I’ve lived in Leelanau County for 50 years.

Age and birthplace: 79 and Jackson, Michigan

Occupation: Retired and a regular volunteer

Marital status: Widowed

You live in Leelanau County because: My husband and I moved here for jobs when Suttons Bay built the new elementary and high schools. We figured, “Why not stay?” and we enjoyed every minute of it.

Last good movie you saw: I enjoy watching any Star Wars movie and just watched the most recent one.

Last good book you read: I’m actually just finishing up a book I’m revisiting, “Luncheon of the Boating Party,” by Susan Vreeland. It’s about the painter Renoir and I just enjoy reading about famous people.

If you could trade places with one person for one day, it would be: I don’t know that I would want to. I’m happy with who I am and where I am.

Things important to you that you’ve accomplished so far: I really enjoy doing anything I can with or for people, mostly through volunteering. I was a representative with Youth for Understanding for 20 years, finding families for exchange students and it was always interesting how families accepted the kids and the kids accepted them.

What you hope to be doing in 10 years: I’d like to do this again.

Things you lose sleep over: Nothing, that would be a waste of time.

If you could change one thing in Leelanau County it would be: I think that everything is fine right now.

Favorite dessert: Any fruit pie. No ice cream needed; I don’t want to mess it up.

Are you a coffee drinker? In the morning I drink coffee and in the afternoon I prefer tea.

Favorite place in Leelanau County: I like the Suttons Bay football field. Sitting up in the bleachers, watching the game and looking out over Lake Michigan is such a beautiful view that I’ve enjoyed many times.

If you had more time you would: I’m retired, so I have plenty of time. I just enjoy every minute of doing something.

The words that best describe you are: Friendly, open to new ideas and always ready for a trip.
