Follies runs tonight in Northport

The Northport Community Art Center will be the place to be tonight for the 7th annual Northport Follies, a fundraiser for the Northport Promise.

Gloria Thomas is director of the program, which has become a longstanding tradition in the Northport community. Curtains open at 7 p.m.

“Years ago, it was to support the Leelanau Memorial Hospital. But it has also helped the Children’s Discovery Center (now the Leelanau Children’s Center) and the library,” Thomas said.

The follies was resurrected seven years ago to support the Northport Promise.

The Promise program, established in 2008, serves as a scholarship fund for Northport graduates, It’s assisted over 70 students attend Michigan colleges, universities and vocational schools.

Over 10 years The Northport Promise has given away nearly $300,000, according to the Promise website.

The Follies lineup includes the Traverse City Rotary Club’s Lawn Chair Drill Team, a classic flutist and a young opera singer.

Tom Wetherbee will serve as emcee. A Bavarian Oom-pah band will perform in the lobby during intermission and after the show.

Attendees can also participate in a 50/50 raffle and are eligible for door prizes.

Admission for the program is $10 for adults. They are available at the door.
