One trail, two events

You don’t need to sign up to hike the 20-mile Heritage Trail Saturday with Jerry Pearson, or to have an input on the design of its last leg. Pearson, who is known for hosting outside worship Sunday mornings at Old Settlers park, is asking those who want to walk to trail to meet at 8 a.m. Saturday.

Trail users may want to offer input into its final leg. An open house is set for next Wednesday, Aug. 19, at 5:30 p.m. in the Cleveland Township Hall.

Horticulture opens its house

The Northwest Michigan Horticulture Research Center will host an annual open house today that includes educational sessions, wagon tours, equipment demonstrations, a social hour and dinner. Events start at 1 p.m., with social hour set for 5:30 p.m. followed by dinner featuring locally produced food. Dinner tickets are $15 per person. Call 946-1510.

Northport to toot its horn

The Northport Community Band will perform a fan favorite — its Sousa Concert — on at 8 p.m. Saturday in the Northport Community Arts Center. Sousa tunes will be joined by inspiring works from other marching band composers. A son of an immigrant Portuguese father and a German mother, Sousa was known for his patriotic American marches. Tickets for adults are $15; students are $5.
