Beach closed for one day

Marina Park in Suttons Bay was closed to swimmers last week after high levels of E. coli were found in the water.

The Benzie-Leelanau District Health Department (BLDHD) issued a no-contact advisory last Thursday, Aug. 23, after samples taken reached 1,413 parts per 100 ml.

The designation is issued when samples reach the 1,000 parts per 100 ml.

Oftentimes E. coli levels are increased during rain/wind events, said Tom Fountain, BLDHD environmental health director.

A sample taken the following day showed levels that full contact could resume at the beach.

No contact above the waist is recommended for samples with readings of 300 to 1,000 parts per 100 ml. Full body contact is approved for 0 to 300 parts per 100 ml.

Tests are taken on Wednesdays, so any effect from the heavy rains that fell Tuesday night across Leelanau were known after the Enterprise went to press.
