Day’s body recovered

Family and friends will gather at 2 p.m. Saturday at Martinson Funeral Home to remember Randy Day, a Suttons Bay native, whose body was recovered last Wednesday from west Grand Traverse Bay.

Day, 42, lived in Grand Traverse County where he worked for Brickyard Towing. Day went missing Sept. 24 after leaving for a kayaking trip on West Bay.

Dive teams were deployed with an ROV (remote operated vehicle), when a man matching Day’s description was seen about 12:30 p.m. Sept. 24 near Bowers Harbor.

A charter boat captain spotted Day’s unmanned kayak near Neahtawanta Point that same afternoon, prompting authorities to begin searching that area.

Day’s truck was found at Bowers Harbor boat launch. And his backpack washed up on the shore at Lee Point two days later.

Leelanau and Grand Traverse county divers found Day’s body about 45 feet below the surface last Wednesday.

A driver’s license inside a pocket was used to identify him.
