County Democrats plan events for Congressional candidates

Leelanau County Democrats will host “meet and greet” sessions in Suttons Bay for two candidates seeking election to Congress.

Gary McDowell of Rudyard and Derek Bailey of Maple City are seeking election to Michigan’s 1st Congressional District, which starting with the 2012 election will include Leelanau County.

According to a release from county Democrats, McDowell is a three-term state representative and an outspoken defender of the Great Lakes, a small businessman and has support from national and local allies including the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and organized labor.

Bailey is the chairman of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. He was appointed by President Obama in November 2010 to the National Advisory Council on Indian Education. Bailey is also an adjunct professor at Grand Valley State University’s School of Social Work.

McDowell is scheduled to be at the Village Inn in Suttons Bay from 3:30-5 p.m. on Sunday, February 12. Bailey will be at the same location from 3:30 to 5 p.m. March 4.

There will be a cash bar and snacks for each. There is no charge for either, however, contributions may be made to the candidate’s election committees.
