County planners elect officers, set goals

Greg Julian was re-elected chairman of the Leelanau County Planning Commission during the commission’s annual organizational meeting last week.

Julian will also continue to serve as the commission’s representative on the Leelanau County Parks and Recreation Commission.

Senior planner Kristin Smith of the county Planning and Community Development department reported that Jay Johnson was elected vice chairman and Kathy Turner was elected chairman pro tem during the Jan. 27 meeting.

Reappointed to serve on the planning commission’s education committee were Turner, Johnson, Don Miller and Charles Godbout.

Among the commission’s goals for 2009 are the creation of “model ordinance language” that may be used by Leelanau County’s townships and villages, with a focus on zoning ordinance language that may facilitate the expansion of wireless communication including high speed Internet service throughout the county.

Commission members also decided on a meeting schedule for 2009. Most regular meetings will continue to be held on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. in the board meeting room at the Leelanau County Government Center. An annual joint meeting of the Leelanau County Planning Commission with township and village planning commissions has been slated for Wednesday, April 29, at 7 p.m. at the Government Center.

During their next regular monthly meeting on Feb. 24, Leelanau County planners are slated to hear a report from organizers of The Grand Vision, a regional land use and transportation study involving six northwestern Lower Michigan counties that has been under way since last year.
