Talking with: Dean Robb

Name: Dean Robb.

Town or township of residence: Village of Suttons Bay.

Resident of county since: “I’ve been here since 1971. I had a mid-life crisis, and I wanted to leave the city and get in the country, so I left Detroit and came up here.”
DEAN ROBB of Suttons Bay is an attorney and has resided in Leelanau County for nearly 40 years.DEAN ROBB of Suttons Bay is an attorney and has resided in Leelanau County for nearly 40 years.
Age and birthplace: “I was born in 1924 in southern Illinois, out in the country.”

Occupation: “I’m an attorney.”

Marital status: “I’m married to Cindy. We have one son Matt who’s 25. He’s teaching in Teach for America. I have a stepson, Ben, and three children from my first marriage: Laura, Allen, and Blair.”

You live in Leelanau County because: “It’s the most beautiful county in the world.”

Last good movie you saw: “The American Radical at the Traverse City Film Festival. It was critical of Israel’s treatment of Palestine, and was done by a highly trained Jewish historian.”

Last good book you read: “Mark Twain’s Letters from the Earth. It’s about everything, the earth, life, but it wasn’t published until after his death. It’s funnier than hell.”

If you could trade places with one person for a day, who would that be: “President Obama, to end the war in Afghanistan. I’d pull our troops out of every country in the world.”

Things important to you that you have accomplished so far: “It’s never ending, but the thing I’m proudest of is that I’ve stuck up for the little guy. I’m against bullying and discriminations of all kinds. I believe in equality for everybody, and I hope that’s what my signature is.”

What you hope to be doing in 10 years: “Be alive, still kicking and screaming. I’m 86 so that would be good.”

Things you lose sleep over: “I’m really worried about what direction our country is going. All these wars, the war on terror, the war on drugs, they’re all a mistake. The tail is wagging the dog. The military industrial complex is calling the shots and that’s terrible.”

If you could change one thing in Leelanau County, it would be: “I would consolidate all of the high schools under one superintendant, and build more public recreational facilities. We have a priceless peninsula which can be overrun by too much development; we really have to watch what we do.”

Favorite dessert: “Strawberry shortcake. I think it’s beautiful and it signifies spring and the strawberry season.”

Are you a coffee drinker: “Yes. About three or four cups a day, black.”

Favorite place in Leelanau County: “Good Harbor beach. It’s miles and miles of beautiful sandy shore, overlooking the Manitou islands. You can see Pyramid Point and, at the right place, you can see Leland and almost down to Empire.”

If you had more time, you would: “Probably play more golf and go fishing more. Just spend more time in the water in general; I don’t do enough of that.”

The words that best describe you are: “Restless.”
