SUTTONS BAY - Marie Ann Marek, 85, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at her home surrounded by her loving family. Marie was born on September 17, 1938, in Detroit to Adam and Jean (Aiello) Lorenz.

On October 27, 1956, in Taylor, MI, Marie married the love of her life, Howard Leroy Marek, who preceded her in death on June 3, 2020. Marie was the matriarch of the Marek family, known for her fierce love and unwavering loyalty. She served as a mother figure to many of her sons’ friends as well, nurturing them with her kindness and wisdom.

Marie’s professional life was marked by dedication and hard work. She was integral part of the family business, working at H&M Grocery and later H&M Sales Shop in Lake Leelanau. Her warm personality and strong work ethic earned her numerous friends throughout the years. Marie also worked at Tom’s, where she made lasting connections within the community.

A passionate bowler, Marie found joy and camaraderie on the bowling lanes. She also played a crucial role in the family cherry farm, driving the flatbed truck to transport cherries to the Leelanau Fruit Company in Suttons Bay. Known for her meticulous nature, Marie maintained a clean and welcoming home where family and friends always felt cherished.

Above all, Marie treasured her family, especially her grandchildren, whom she adored and supported unconditionally. Her love knew no bounds, and she was always there to offer guidance and encouragement.

Marie is survived by her devoted sons, Jeffrey Marek, and Mark Marek; grandchildren, Theresa Marek, Jeffrey Marek II, Kyle Marek, Matthew Marek, Sean Marek, and Ryan Marek; greatgrandchildren, Issac and Gemma; her brother, Richard Lorenz; nephew, Michael Lorenz; and her beloved dog, Brandey.

She is preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband, Howard, with whom she shared sixty-three years of cherished memories.

Graveside service and burial in St. Michael’s Cemetery in Suttons Bay will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 7th. A celebration of Marie and Howard’s life will be held after the service at the Marek family home.

Memorial donations may be made in Marie’s honor to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at ALSAC/St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
