such a place.
But rst, time for a bite of your
own fruit. Far from forbidden, the heirloom apples that grow on now-abandoned farms in the Port Oneida Historic District are yours for the taking, says Tom Ulrich. He’s the deputy superintendent of the Lakeshore.
“All the fruit trees in Port Oneida — really, anywhere in the lakeshore — you can go and harvest apples from. You can’t do it commercially. But you can take what you can eat,” Ulrich said.
Once in the Lakeshore, your color tour options become nearly limit- less. Like to bike? Try the Heritage Trail from Empire to Bohemian Road.
Like to walk?
“I would encourage people to get out and walk some of our trails, like Shauger Hill, which ends at (Pierce Stocking) Scenic Drive. And Windy
Moraine is right across from the scenic drive. And the Bay View is a good one,” Ulrich said.
A half-mile walk from the Bay View trailhead off Thoreson Road puts you at Lookout Point with 360 degree views Leelanau.
And for a driving tour, you sim- ply can’t beat Pierce Stocking Drive. By now you’ve probably given up on your ugly hunt. Price, howev- er, suggests soaking in more beauty
from one nal perch.
“There’s an almost secret spot. I
took some people on a geology tour and we stopped. It’s a beautiful view to the south all the way to Point Betsy. You can see the lines of the moraine systems, and the area around Empire,” Price said.
At the risk of secrecy, the place is called Johnson Turnout. The half- acre parcel, located on the west side of County Road 677 north of M-72, seemingly sits on top of the world — with no ugly in sight.
