bikes in groups because they enjoy the area, they like our atmosphere and we are in the middle of it all,” said Cathy Konopka of Suttons Bay, a manager at Northern Distillery.

County establishments want bicyclists to be happy and healthy on tours through wine county. That’s why they offer these suggestions
that will help ensure your safe return home:
• Don’t take on too much in one day. You’ll never get to all
of the county’s wineries, so why not spread it out?
• Check hours of tasting rooms. Especially in the
shoulder seasons, some are not open every day. • Drink plenty of water with your wine..
• And eat with your wine. Some wineries offer food, and many offer picnic tables should you
pack your own lunch.
• Dress in layers. Leelanau weather can change
quickly.
• Ride on the right-hand side of the road. Going against
traf c is against the law.
• Use hand signals and stay cautious at intersections.
• Wear a helmet. People don’t expect bicyclists to arrive with perfect hair.
• Tour mid week when county roads tend to be quieter. Also, winery staff will have more time to offer up wine facts and local history.

But somehow they do nd a way
to bike a bottle or two back to their starting spot.
